What is a pre-filter?

A pre-filter is an essential accessory designed to protect your pump. It ensures your pump stays safe from solid particles like sand, leaves, or twigs that might be in your water source. The water passes through the filter before entering your pump, stopping these dirt particles. This not only helps your pump last longer but also makes sure clean water goes to your garden or home. 

Our pre-filters are designed for easy maintenance. They have a filter cartridge that you can wash and replace. The filter glass can be easily unscrewed for cleaning or changing.

Understanding when your pump needs a filter

When do you need a pre-filter for your pump?

A pre-filter is used mainly for self-priming pumps, such as a garden pump or booster pump, or even a borehole pump. If your water source, like a rainwater tank or well, contains solid particles, a pre-filter becomes important. These pieces of dirt can sneak into your pump, causing damage and shortening its life. The pre-filter is like a protector, catching these solid particles before they harm your pump. 

When do you need a cartridge for a pre-filter?

A filter cartridge is designed to fit inside your pre-filter housing. You’ll need a cartridge when:

• It is too dirty or clogged. Even though our cartridges are washable, they can become too dirty or worn for proper cleaning. This can lead to reduced water flow. 

• It’s damaged: if the cartridge is physically torn, cracked, or broken, it can no longer filter properly. 

Replacing it ensures your pre-filter continues to protect your pump. 

How to properly use a filter

Installation

A pre-filter is made to screw directly onto your pump’s suction connection. This is where the water enters the pump. This makes sure all incoming water passes through the filter first, stopping dirt particles before they reach your pump. Our pre-filter has a standard 1-inch screw thread. This allows for direct mounting and makes it work with many garden and booster pumps. 

Maintenance

To keep your filter working properly, regular maintenance is important. When the filter becomes dirty, you can easily unscrew the filter glass. This allows you to either clean the integrated filter cartridge or replace it with a new one.
